My boyfriend and I are in high school and want to get married. How old do we have to be?
Texas residents must be adults–over the age of 18–to get married. If you are over 14 and have parental consent, you can get married in most cases. Emancipated minors may be able to get married.
Research consistently shows that people who get married young are more likely to divorce, live in poverty, and face other challenges. We urge you to really think about this decision first, and to consult with an adult you trust. If you want to get married to escape a bad or abusive home, consider talking to a teacher instead. They can help you report abuse and find safety.
